Actor Anupam Kher’s friendship with late actor Satish Kaushik went back over four decades. Anupam was heartbroken after Satish’s death on March 9, and on the late actor’s birth anniversary last week, he organised a celebration of his life. The event was attended by Satish’s friends from the industry, Anil Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar, among others.
During the event, Anupam recalled his last conversation with Satish, mere hours before his death. Satish died of a heart attack after attending a Holi party in Gurugram. Anupam recalled being concerned for his well-being during their phone call, and said that Satish assured him that he was okay.
He said, “On 7th he came on my birthday, he called me up, maine kaha, ‘Tu bahut thaka hua sound kar raha hai. Kyu aisa kar raha hai (You sound very tired, what’s wrong)?’ Tu aisa kar, hospital mein chala ja, check in kar, don’t admit yourself, go and check in’. Toh usne kaha, ‘Don’t worry, main abhi marne waala nahi hoon’ (Go to the hospital and check in. Don’t get admitted, just check in. He said, ‘Don’t worry, I am not going to die’). And after three hours he unfortunately left us.”
Anupam choked up as he narrated the conversation. He was triggered after Anil Kapoor broke down in tears in the crowd. Anupam had called Anil up to the stage to say a few words, but Anil stopped in his tracks and went back to his seat because he couldn’t control his tears.
In an interview shortly after Satish’s death, Anupam had spoken about how the news was broken to him. “To even talk about it (Satish Kaushik’s death) is a weird feeling. Last night, around 2 am, my house help answered a call. I was asleep, and he told me that Satish ji chale gaye hai (Satish ji is gone)… Satish, Anil and I have been friends for over 40 years. Anil Kapoor sahab is abroad and unka bohot hi devastating sa call aayaa mujhe (Anil Kapoor is abroad, he called me, he is devastated),” he had said.
