Director Rajkumar Santoshi‘s 1994 film Andaz Apna Apna continues to tickle audience’s funny bone even after almost 29 years of its release. While the film is now considered a cult classic with a stellar cast, upon its release the movie didn’t do any business. Rajkumar says reveals the reasons behind the film’s box office failure.
Andaz Apna Apna revolved around two street smart boys Amar and Prem, played by Aamir and Salman respectively, who travel to woo an heiress but end up confused with her identity when Raveena Tandon and her best friend and confidant Karisma Kapoor exchange identities. The film’s dialogues are remembered to the day.
In an interview with Aajtak, Rajkumar decoded the box office failure of the film and said, “While Andaz Apna Apna was a completely different story in those days. It has more comedy, adventure, and humour than romance. People took the time to understand this film. When the film was released 29 years ago, the distributors were also newcomers.”
Nowadays, films are promoted actively much before theor release date, with multi-city tours and social media collaborations. However, back in the day, Rajkumar recalled that “neither Salman nor Aamir were in the city to promote the film” and he himself was shooting somewhere else.
“There was no activity related to the film. There was no interaction with the media either. Whatever was to be done for the publicity of the film, that too could not be done. The distributors were also very angry,” Rajkumar said.
When asked if the film will ever get a remake, Rajkumar is quick to say, “There is no scope to do anything in its remake. The film looks fresh even today. Whoever tries to make a remake of this evergreen film will drown because it is not possible to make such a film.”
His last directorial was Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh, which depicted a war of ideologies between Mahatma Gandhi and his assassin Nathuram Godse. The film released in January 2023.
