Late singer Amar Singh Chamkila, often called the Elvis of Punjab, was known for his massy Punjabi songs that were loved and reviled in equal measure. Chamkila shared the stage with his wife and singer Amarjot Kaur. Amarjot was Chamkila’s second wife and Chamkila’s friend and musician Kesar Singh Tiki — who played a key role in his career and life — claimed that the singer did not reveal that he was previously married to Gurmail Kaur before tying the knot with Amarjot.
In an earlier interview with RPD 24, Tiki shared that after singing together for a couple of years, and gaining a lot of success and fame, Amarjot shared that her family members were thinking of switching her singing partner. They wanted her to sing with Kartar Ramla but Amarjot didn’t seem very interested in that. Tiki recalled her saying, “If Chamkila wants to marry me, then I am ready for it.”
Tiki said that he spoke to Chamkila about this the same night and the singer agreed with the idea of marrying Amarjot. In fact, when Tiki asked Chamkila if he had been married before, the singer did not reveal that he had a wife and children. “I asked Chamkila if he had been married before. He lied to me and said that my family wants me to marry my dead brother’s wife, but I am not married,” he shared.
Soon after Tiki got a signal from both sides, he got to work and arranged for the wedding in Phagwara. “I got the tent ready overnight. I spoke to gyani saab (priest) at the gurudwara. I asked him to finish the Anand Karaj in ten minutes instead of two hours,” he said and added that he sent Chamkila to Phagwara a night before and left with Amarjot the next day. Tiki shared that his parents were already there and they blessed the newlyweds. After a week or so, the couple came back to Ludhiana.
In Imtiaz Ali’s recent film Amar Singh Chamkila starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, it is shown that Parineeti’s Amarjot was unaware of her husband’s marital status. In an old interview, Chamkila’s songwriter Swaran Sivia had said that Chamkila was truthful about his first marriage and revealed everything to Amarjot before he tied the knot. Amarjot’s sister Jaswant Kaur, however, claimed that the family got to know about Chamkila’s first wife only after the birth of Amarjot and Chamkila’s son.
