Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has ended the brouhaha around his Canadian nationality. The actor has posted a picture of the official papers announcing him as a citizen of India. The paper, which comes from the Government of India announces, ‘This is to certify that the person whose particulars are given below has been registered as a citizen of India…’
The official paper refers to the actor as Akshay Hariom Bhatia and his father’s name is mentioned as Brijmohan Bhatia and his mother’s name as Aruna Bhatia. While his place of birth is Delhi, his previous nationality has been noted as Canadian.
Akshay shared the photo with the caption, “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind! 🇮🇳.” As the actor shared the news, his fans congratulated him for acquiring the Indian citizenship.
Earlier, Akshay had spoken about his decision to renounce his Canadian passport. “India is everything to me… Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I’m fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything…,” the 55-year-old actor said during an interview with Aaj Tak.
Akshay Kumar had applied for Canadian citizenship back in the 1990s when his 15 films tanked at the box office in a row. “I thought that ‘Bhai, my films are not working and one has to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘Come here’. I applied and I got in. I had just two films left for release and it is just luck that they both became superhits. My friend said, ‘Go back, start working again’. I got some more films and I kept getting more work. I forgot that I had the passport. I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed,” he said during the interview.
However, the process got delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. He told Hindustan Times, “I had said it in 2019, I applied for it. Then uske baad pandemic aagaya. Uske 2-2.5 saal sab kuch band hogaya. Renounce ka abhi mera letter aagaya hai (Then the pandemic happened and everything shut down for 2-2.5 years. My renounce letter is here), and very soon my whole passport will be coming.”
“Having a Canadian passport does not mean I am any less of an Indian. I am very much Indian. I have been here since last nine years when I got the passport. And I don’t want to get into the reason of why, what happened, my films were not working etc,” he had added.
Meanwhile, Akshay is riding on the success of his recently released film OMG 2. The film delivers a string message around sex education.
