Ajay Devgn, who has directed many hit movies over the years, made a film titled Raju Chacha in 2000. At that time, Raju Chacha, made on a budget of Rs 25 crore, was the most expensive Indian film. However, despite having a stellar cast including the actor, Kajol, Rishi Kapoor, Johny Lever, and Sanjay Dutt in special appearance, the film tanked at the box office with just a lifetime collection of Rs 20 crore.
After the film’s bad run at the box office, Ajay Devgn did many films to overcome the film’s loss. In a recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, Rohit Shetty, who shares a friendship of 33 years with the actor, recalled that phase of Ajay Devgn’s life and shared how the actor did movies right, left, and centre.
He said, “We made one more film, Raju Chacha… that was not a big hit. That time, we spent a lot of money. He was the producer of the film, he lost a lot of money. After that, there was a phase where he did films left, right, centre. His mindset was that, ‘It’s okay if we have to bear the loss, but nobody else should suffer because of us. Every technician and other crew members should be paid. He hadn’t changed his car, even his mobile for years.”
While talking about Raju Chacha failure, Ajay Devgn added to Rohit Shetty’s anecdote and said, “Johny Lever was also a part of the film and he refused to take his fees. He said, ‘You have incurred a lot of loss, don’t pay me.'” However, Ajay forcibly paid him for his work. Later, when they went to the comedian with All The Best, he said he would do the film on one condition.
Ajay Devgn shared, “We paid him for Raju Chacha. Then we went to him with All The Best. He said, ‘I will do this film only on one condition that I will not take a penny for this.'” Rohit Shetty added, “Ajay was the producer for All The Best too. So, Johny Lever was like, ‘You guys paid me despite Raju Chacha was a flop, so this time, I am not going to take any money.'”
“He is imaan ka pakka”, shared Ajay Devgn. Raju Chacha was directed by Ajay Devgn’s first cousin, Anil Devgan. Apart from Raju Chacha, the filmmaker also directed Blackmail for him. Meanwhile, Johny Lever and Ajay Devgn worked on several films together. Their work includes, Total Dhamaal, Golmaal Again, Golmaal 3, and Ishq, among others.
