Actor Vicky Kaushal is celebrating a decade as an actor in the film industry, having made his debut with the film Masaan. In a new interview, Vicky said that more than actors, he has formed lasting bonds with the directors he has worked with. He listed out a few of them, but curiously omitted Anurag Kashyap, with whom he got his start as an assistant on Gangs of Wasseypur. He also starred in Anurag’s Raman Raghav 2.0, Manmarziyaan, and Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat.
Appearing at the Yuvaa conclave, Vicky was asked which actors he has forged strong relationships with over the last decade, and he said, “For me, it’s mainly directors. I’ll be very honest. Anand Tiwari, Meghna Gulzar, Laxman Utekar sir…” Vicky has worked twice with all three of them. With Anand Tiwari, he did Love Per Square Foot and Bad Newz; with Meghna Gulzar, he did Raazi and Sam Bahadur; with Laxman Utekar, he did Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Chhaava.
Vicky also named Neeraj Ghaywan, the director of Masaan. “Also Mozez Singh; he was actually my first director. He made this film called Zubaan, which was the first film we shot, but it came after Masaan. He was the first guy who ever said a yes to my audition. Mozez is very special. All these people, I know I can meet them, talk to them, and not have filmy discussions. These are the people,” he said.
In the past, Vicky has said that the first time he performed for the camera was for an international film that Anurag recommended him for. In an interview with acting coach Atul Mongia on the Artist Collective YouTube channel, Vicky said, “My first on-camera appearance was in a Michael Winterbottom film. Anurag called me one day and asked, ‘Listen, you want to do an item number?’ I hesitated, but he said it would be with Huma Qureshi, and it would be great.”
In a 2016 interview with Hindustan Times, Vicky described Anurag as his ‘mentor’ in the film industry. “Anurag is like family to me, he is my mentor. I started out in this industry with his film. I was an assistant director in his film Gangs of Wasseypur and I know him personally. He is my guardian. I constantly run all my decisions by him,” Vicky had said.
Vicky’s father, action director Sham Kaushal, had once revealed that the only time he made calls on Vicky’s behalf was to Anurag, who had also shown support to him during his cancer battle. The action director said in an interview with Friday Talkies, “I had called Anurag (Kashyap) asking him to give Vicky an apprenticeship. So he (Vicky) took a train to join Anurag. It’s there where he learnt that nothing comes easy.” In a social media post, Sham Kaushal also expressed gratitude to Anurag for giving him strength to fight back against cancer, and also paused production on his film Black Friday until he could recover and participate.
In an interview with The Lallantop, Anurag said that he and Vicky aren’t in touch. “I don’t have much interaction with him much these days. I don’t judge him, because every person has their own reasons… I don’t repeat myself. What I wanted to say, I said,” Anurag said, and continued, “This is why I left Mumbai. Every person has their own ambitions, and it is up to them on how they choose to achieve them. It’s not my responsibility. It took me a while to detach myself. But the atmosphere in Bollywood has become more money-minded. People are looking at ‘crores’ in their decision-making. This is what I ran away from. I don’t want to return to that world.”
