Adnan Sami turned his life around when a doctor told him that he had only six months to live if he did not change his lifestyle. The singer-composer drastically changed his diet and lifestyle, and managed to lose around 120 kgs. In a new interview, the Tera Chehra singer opened up about his “thin days” and how he was a “fit and thin teenager” who was very active in sports.

“I was not 230 kgs all my life. I was very fit and thin in my teens. I used to play rugby, squash. I was the squash champion of Abu Dhabi. I used to play polo, horseback riding, tent pegging. The weight came to me much later. But I had a whole bunch of clothes in my wardrobe which were from my thin days. My mother turned around one day and said, ‘Listen, why don’t you get rid of these? Get rid of these clothes because they are taking up too much space. You can use these cupboards for something else.’ I said, ‘No, one day, I am going to fit into them. And my mother was like ‘excuse me, wake up and smell the coffee,’” he told Humans of Bombay.

Adnan Sami said that his mother would “diplomatically” tell him that he could buy new clothes later but he insisted that he wanted to save his clothes as he had not accepted his weight mentally. He said, “Diplomatically she would turn around and say to me that buy new clothes then, fashion changes. I said, ‘No, a lot of these are very classic.’ They are not going to change.”

Adnan shared that it was his non-acceptance that ultimately helped him in losing weight. “Mentally, I was not accepting my weight either which is probably why ultimately I did manage to lose it,” he said.
