Aditya Roy Kapoor has shone in his performance in The Night Manager’s Hindi adaption. Now, the actor is all set to play a double role in Gumraah, a film that he signed almost three years ago, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.
In this interview with indianexpress.com, the actor talks success and failure he’s encountered in his 14-year career in the Hindi film industry, and the fail-safes he has in place in order to not be misled as an actor working in Bollywood. He says that as an actor, he listens to people’s opinions but finally does what his instincts tell him to, as Bollywood is a “tricky industry to traverse.”
He said, “I think it is good to listen to people’s opinions but it is very important to develop a strong gut (feeling) about taking your own decisions. When you can completely claim your successes and failures and not blame them on anyone else… it is something you develop over time. If you just dilute it by constantly listening to too many people (then) you won’t know what you really feel for something. So it is important that you are your best guide in a certain way. Yes, it is a tricky industry to traverse. There are advantage of having someone take you through certain things, but when it comes to the kind of films, you need to trust your own instincts. You can still go wrong, but at least those decisions will be your own.”
Aditya made his acting debut in 2009, however, his breakthrough was Aashiqui 2 (2013) with Shraddha Kapoor. Amid the hits and flops, he’s also taken long breaks between projects. Aditya says, “Over the years, I have realised I want to do more work. I enjoy being on set a lot, I love it, that’s probably one of my favourite places to be. So, my learning is to try and do more of it and not take big gaps. I’m not necessarily really productive in those gaps, I’d rather work more I guess.”
When asked why he chose to do Gumraah, the actor shared it was because he gets to plays a double role in the film, something he’s not done before.
“I love this genre when I have to watch a film. So when this film came to me I was drawn to the story, the plot, all the twists and turns. When you feel like the film is two steps ahead of you and you are constantly trying to think and wonder… I felt like it had all those ingredients. The added bonus was it has a double role, something that I have never done before. But it wasn’t just a double role, it was a double role that was well written. It feels like two different people and a good challenge, so it all felt right.”
The actor is loving this phase in his career and wants to make sure he makes the most of it and do more roles that can connect with the audience.
“To try and do things that keep you up at night, get you nervous, and stuff that you haven’t done before. I want to try out new things. And, more than just the role it has to be the story that connects, the film has to work in totality. There’s no real formula and I don’t think that the way I choose films is going to change because I am going through this phase now,” he says.
Aditya enjoys a great fan following on social media but he says he doesn’t let that attention affect him and chooses to keep most of his life “under wraps”.
He says, “I keep most things under wraps. I guess I have always been that way, (I am) always private. For me, being a part of social media happened recently, not too recently but I was late to the party. Even then for a while I was posting very rarely, now during (film) release I get really excited and post a little more but then for two-three months I’ll not post anything. I don’t necessarily share very much of my personal life and space,” the actor concludes.
