In her career spanning over two decades, actor Priyamani has worked across various languages, winning the hearts of audiences nationwide with her impactful performances in a wide range of roles. From Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn to Mohanlal, Mammootty, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Puneeth Rajkumar, and Daggubati Venkatesh, she has shared the screen with legends of major film industries. Recently, Priyamani compared the work cultures of Bollywood and the South, revealing significant differences between the two.
Pointing out that the South film industry — comprising Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada — takes punctuality much more seriously, she noted that the workday usually begins quite late in Bollywood. “The working style is different in both. In the South, they generally start on time. They will start at 7 or 8 am. When we say 8, we actually start at 8, no matter what. Here, I have noticed that when you say 8, people arrive at that point of time,” she said during an interview with News18 Showsha.
Priyamani’s comment carries even more weight when viewed in the context of the ongoing debate over the 8-hour workday demand that arose after Deepika Padukone’s exit from director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel, both headlined by Prabhas.
Affirming that pay parity is still a distant dream in the film industry, Priyamani said she, however, has no complaints about it, as she feels a person’s remuneration is determined by their market value. “I believe that whatever is your market value, you ask for it and you will get paid for it. There have been times when I was paid less than my male co-star. It does not bother me, though. I know my market value and my worth. This is my opinion and my experience. I will charge what I believe I deserve. I won’t ask for an unnecessary hike,” she added.
While Priyamani entered the world of cinema through Telugu, playing the female lead in Evare Athagadu (2003), she quickly caught the attention of other film industries as well and soon made her foray into Tamil and Malayalam. Her career truly peaked following the release of Ameer’s Paruthiveeran (2007), wherein she shared the screen with Karthi. Her performance in the movie earned Priyamani the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Her performances in films such as Thirakkatha, Raam, Pranchiyettan and the Saint, Chaarulatha, Idolle Ramayana, Narappa, Virata Parvam, and Article 370 also received recognition. She further gained nationwide attention with her performance in the show The Family Man. Priyamani was most recently seen in the legal drama streaming series Good Wife and is gearing up for the release of Jana Nayagan, starring “Thalapathy” Vijay.
