Actor Abhay Deol has always carved a different identity for himself compared to his cousins and fellow Bollywood actors Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol. While his cousins have largely been associated with action-packed roles, Abhay has chosen films that stand apart, reflecting his unique personality. In a recent interaction, the actor opened up about his childhood, growing up in a famous film family, and also explained why he has chosen never to have children of his own.
Speaking on the YouTube channel Jai Madaan – Lady of Fortune, Abhay said, “I don’t want to have children. If I was to settle down, then I would adopt over having my own because I just look at the world and I think why would I bring a child into this?” He further added, “I am happy, but the planet can’t be burdened with such an exploding population so I try and avoid adding more population to that.”
When asked if his decision stemmed from not wanting too much responsibility, Abhay responded, “I might be controlling and possessive than what I actually am if I had a child. I might lose my sense of easy-going and relaxed, I might be always on edge, protective, possessive. We were very protected growing up and I might reflect that on my own child.”
Abhay also shared insights into his childhood and the experience of growing up in a joint family surrounded by successful actors like Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol. He recalled, “At home in the beginning, it was never like somebody is a star, they were like papa, uncle, bhaiya for us. It is when you grow up that you realise that hum alag hain (we are different).”
He further explained, “We are not like ordinary people because we get recognised wherever we go. Our last name is recognised. And you kind of get singled out because in school whether someone was a fan of my family and we would get extra special treatment by teachers. But when someone is not a fan, and they think that your family is not good, so they would put difficulties in your path. You have to be always on guard, knowing whether this person will be nice or bad to me. You come in knowing that you will be pre-judged.”
On the professional front, Abhay was last seen in the 2022 film Jungle Cry. He will next be seen in Bun Tikki, co-starring Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman.
