Aamir Khan was the ‘bad guy’ of Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar who won, Deepak Tijori’s character was better: director Mansoor Khan

Mansoor Khan, director of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, called it 'unfortunate' that audiences forgive all the bad behaviour of Aamir Khan’s character just because he was a star.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar remains one of the most iconic films of Aamir Khan’s career. However, in a recent interaction, the film’s director and co-writer Mansoor Khan offered a thought-provoking perspective on the movie, calling it ‘unfortunate’ that audiences forgave the bad behaviour of Aamir’s character, Sanju, simply because the actor was already a star.

Mansoor shared his view that, in his eyes, Aamir’s character was actually the villain of the story. “For me he was the bad guy who won in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Because Aamir’s character wasn’t a good guy. He would steal money from his father, he used to change exam papers, he told lies to Pooja Bedi’s character, he exploited the friendship despite knowing that Anjali (Ayesha Jhulka) likes him. He just acknowledged her as a friend. He is a rogue. He has to grow up and prove himself,” Mansoor said in an interview with India Now and How.

The filmmaker also came to the defence of Deepak Tijori’s character, who was portrayed as the antagonist competing against Aamir in the film. Mansoor said, “Aamir was already a star at that time, so people viewed him as one. Even when he lies in the film, he does it so unabashedly, and people forgive it—that’s unfortunate. Deepak Tijori’s character was actually better. He didn’t do anything wrong. There’s a difference between a hero and a protagonist. Aamir was my protagonist, and I told his story, but he wasn’t a hero.”

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is widely regarded as one of the best coming-of-age films in Indian cinema. It earned two Filmfare Awards, including Best Film. The movie also featured Pooja Bedi, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik Singh, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in pivotal roles.
