Aamir Khan says his high-pitched performance ‘let Laal Singh Chaddha down’, calls Sitaare Zameen Par ‘a great film’

Aamir Khan reflected on Laal Singh Chaddha's box office failure, attributing it to his overly high-pitched performance. He also shared his plans to produce more films to support new talent.

Aamir Khan‘s last film, Laal Singh Chaddha, was a massive failure at the box office, which significantly impacted the actor’s confidence. “It hit me pretty bad, I was shaken emotionally,” the Dangal actor admitted during a recent podcast with Rhea Chakraborty. Although Aamir was deeply disappointed by the film’s failure, he didn’t shy away from holding himself accountable for it.

Reflecting on his performance, Aamir said, “My performance in Laal Singh Chaddha was pitched too high, unlike the original, which had a great performance by Tom Hanks, who pulled everyone with him. My performance let Laal Singh Chaddha down. My performance was not good, according to my reading. I think I might do better in my next film.”

When Rhea mentioned that she liked his performance in Laal Singh Chaddha and didn’t think it needed improvement, Aamir responded, “As a creative person, I feel what we had intended to create, we reached very close to it (in Laal Singh Chaddha). So this was one of those films that some people really loved, it was their favourite film, while most people could not connect with it. And the reason why they could not connect was because my performance was weak… look when you make a mistake or you fail or you are weak, it can be an opportunity. You have to be very honest why the film did not work. I loved working in Sitaare Zameen Par after Laal Singh Chaddha despite saying I will not work in films. It (Sitaare Zameen Par) is a great film.”

He added, “I made another decision: for the next 10 years of my career, until I turn 70, I want to become a platform through which talented people I admire can use me as a springboard. For the first time, I thought that instead of doing little work, I should do maximum work in these remaining 10 years. Even if I’m not acting, I’ll be producing films and telling stories I believe in. I’m currently producing four films, one of which was Laapata Ladies. I want to make 5-6 films a year so I can give more opportunities to new talent.”

Directed by Advait Chandan, Laal Singh Chaddha was the adaptation of Hollywood blockbuster Forrest Gump. The film was a major disappointment at the box office and minted Rs 130 crore against the massive budget of Rs 180 crore.
