‘Aamir Khan rarely spoke to me during Thugs of Hindostan, was lost in his own world: Jason Shah

Heeramandi actor Jason Shah recalled working with Aamir Khan on Thugs of Hindostan together, and said that although they had good conversations, Aamir was lost in his own world.

Actor Jason Shah, who played the villainous Cartwright in the Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, spoke about having minimal interaction with co-star Manisha Koirala on set. Jason and Manisha shared a pivotal scene in the show, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In the past, Jason has spoken often about the lack of communication on the Heeramandi set, and the inadequate interactions that he had even with Bhansali.

In an interview with Sameep Ved, Jason was asked why he and Manisha ‘weren’t talking to each other’ on set, and he said, “She’s an actress who’s very much in her space, and I respect that. I’ve also worked with Aamir Khan on Thugs of Hindostan, and he’s the same kind of person. He’s in that world that he has created for himself. Rarely did he even speak to me. We had some good conversations, but it wasn’t a lot. Mostly it was just him in his world, and Manisha created that for herself, which I respect.”

Asked if this was a demand of the character that she was playing, or if she’s generally someone who doesn’t interact much, Jason said, “Maybe a bit of both. She might generally be a little quiet, whereas I talk to everybody. I like having an easygoing atmosphere. But some people are serious, which is fine.” Jason also spoke about being so out of the loop sometimes that he wouldn’t even know who he’s acting with. One time, he said, he mistook a co-actor for an AD. Another time, because he was coming in and out for a year and a half, he forgot who Mallikajaan was.

Speaking about Bhansali’s non-presence during his scenes, Jason had recently said in an appearance on the Inside the Mind with Rushabh podcast, “He also wasn’t directing that much. I had other directors with me. I just felt we could’ve worked on it a little more, and a lot more colour could’ve come out. It had the capacity, I feel.” Heeramandi opened to mixed reviews earlier this year, and has since been renewed for a second season. Thugs of Hindostan, on the other hand, emerged as a major box office bomb.
