Ali Fazal first came into the spotlight when he appeared in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots playing Joy Lobo. Ali had a short role in the film but he was so memorable in the part that it actually created a lot of opportunities for the actor. In a recent chat, Ali recalled his time on the set of 3 Idiots and shared that he was very taken by Aamir Khan’s curiosity to learn. He also remembered that Aamir had a person around him who would be just carrying the actor’s Rubik’s Cube.
Ali, in a chat with Jist, recalled, “Very late in life, I realised that someone at his stage is still so eager to learn. He is constantly working his brain. I got into books again after meeting him. I would see him frequently on set. We would play chess together. I was very into playing Rubik’s Cube then so I was very excited that I could do it in around 2 minutes 30 seconds.”
Ali Fazal then recalled that even Aamir Khan was very interested in solving Rubik’s Cube at that time and had a person around him who would just be carrying the puzzle for him. “Ek aadmi tha sirf unka Rubik’s cube le khada hua tha (One person was just standing there with his Rubik’s Cube),” he shared. The actor shared that one day, he and Aamir went up against each other and he was quite excited about the match. “I’m thinking I will time him and I’ll match it or something,” he shared and added while he could finish it in 2 minutes 40 seconds, Aamir solved the puzzle in just 55 seconds. “He’s good, he’s very smart,” Ali said.
During the promotions of the film, Aamir would frequently solve the puzzle on set and it was reported at the time that the actor had managed to solve it in 36 seconds at one point.
Ali Fazal’s short role in 3 Idiots opened a lot of doors for the actor. Apart from working in Indian films, Ali frequently appears in Hollywood films as well. He was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya, also starring Tabu and Wamiqa Gabbi.
