Will Bollywood ever witness another trio of superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan? A trio so strong that, despite nearly three decades, their reign remains unchallenged, with their only real competition being each other. It seems highly unlikely. What makes their journeys even more intriguing is that they weren’t always the best of friends. As young actors striving for superstardom, they had their fair share of quarrels and rivalries before eventually patching things up at the top. Today, they share an undeniable camaraderie.
Recently, Aamir Khan himself opened up about their relationship, admitting that they weren’t particularly fond of each other in the early years and had a strong sense of rivalry. In a conversation with Just Too Filmy YouTube channel, when asked if there was ever tension between them, Aamir immediately responded: “Of course there was… What are you even asking? Each of us wanted to outpace the other two. Isn’t that what you call rivalry? So, that was there.”
While that seemed like friendly and healthy competition, Aamir mentioned that there have been fights too. “I think many of them have been well reported in media as well,” he quipped, adding: “It’s not like I am saying something new here.” He added: “There have been disagreements. But these things happen between friends, right? Be it in any relationship, there will be disagreements too along with the friendship.”
However, Aamir emphasised that they have long moved past that phase. “It’s been 35 years since we got together. We were born in the same year, 1965, and made our debuts also more or less around the same time. Now, that rivalry is no longer there. I don’t think Shah Rukh, Salman or I even look at it that way now. Having journeyed together for 35 years, there is a sense of warmth and friendship between us, which has become more pronounced now than ever. We are much more comfortable with each other now,” he mentioned.
Reflecting on their bond, Aamir shared an anecdote from Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding in Jamnagar, Gujarat, when the three took the stage together. “There, Salman and Shah Rukh had something planned for their entry. Then Mukesh (Ambani) called me saying, ‘They are doing something, it would be nice if you also joined.’ It was a last-minute request, saying everyone would be happy if the three of us were on stage together. I immediately said yes. So, we (the three Khans) sat down together for about half an hour and prepared that skit that you guys saw. But the comfort with which we were saying yes and no to each other during the preps made me realise that we were in a comfortable place now. We were able to exchange ideas in a free manner. Once the rehearsal was over, I told them: ‘Now, the three of us can do a film together.’ They also agreed. Having been together for so long, I think the audience would also love to see us together in a film,” he added.
While Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have appeared together in movies such as Karan Arjun and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Aamir shared the screen with Salman in Andaz Apna Apna. However, Shah Rukh and Aamir have yet to do a movie together.
