Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om was one of the biggest hits of 2007, and when the Farah Khan directorial released, “Dard-e-Disco” became one of the highlights of the film. The song was promoted with SRK’s transformation and attaining 6-pack abs, but singer Sukhwinder Singh thought that SRK was getting there by drinking 6 pegs of alcohol. The hilarious anecdote was recounted by Sukhwinder himself in a recent interview.
He shared with Faridoon Shahryar on his YouTube channel that SRK spoke to him about his body transformation before he went in to record the song, which was composed by Vishal Shekhar, and written by Javed Akhtar. “Shah Rukh only told me. He said I am working very hard, 6 pack… that was the first time.. other heroes have also taken off their shirts, like Sanjay Dutt, and Dharmendra before that,” he recalled.
Sukhwinder recalled his call with Shah Rukh and shared with a laugh, “So he told me I have made a 6 pack. We were talking on the phone so it wasn’t very clear. I told Farah, ‘Yeh banda kamaal hai, 6 peg se neeche baat nahi karta (This guy doesn’t think below 6 pegs)’. She asked, ‘Kaunse 6 peg? (Which 6 pegs?)’ I said, ‘Abhi bola toh 6 peg bana raha hu’ (He just said he is making 6 pegs). She said, ‘6 peg nahi 6 pack’ (6 pack, not 6 pegs).”
Sukhwinder said that he really enjoyed the vibe of the song and wanted to record it while dancing so he asked the makers to place two mics, and a bunch of bouquets in the studio. “I said, fill the studio with bouquets of flowers and place two mics because I can’t sing this with a straight face. I need to dance. If I dance, my face might get away from the mic so the other mic will catch my vocals. That’s what they recorded,” he shared.
