The climax of Udaan, where Rajat Barmecha’s Rohan Singh runs away from Ronit Roy’s Bhairav Singh came a full, comic circle as the actors recorded a video of an unlikely reunion– 13 years later. In Udaan, which was filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane’s smashing debut, Ronit Roy played an abusive, cold-hearted father to a teenager, (Rajat Barmecha), who is expelled from his boarding school and is forced to live with his father again.
The film completed 13 years on Sunday and to mark the occasion, the actors posted a video on Instagram, which takes places after the events of Udaan, where Rohan runs away from his father. “It took me 13 years, but I caught you,” Ronit says as his character Bhairav when he bumps into Rajat, out on a run. “And why have you grown your beard?” he asks him, in his quintessential authoritative tone.
“Girls find it sexy hence,” Rajat answers, hesitantly, before asking him a counter question about his missing moustache. Ronit pushes him away and says his line from the film, “disgraceful.” The video then takes a turn, as it shows Ronit riding a bicycle, as Rajat sits pillion, happily.
The video then pauses to show a throwback picture of the duo from Udaan’s set, riding a bicycle, in a sweet, ‘then and now’ moment. The actors posted the video and wrote, “Rohan meets Bhairav Singh in 2023! 🏃 WAIT FOR THE END 🤓 Written and Directed by @ronitboseroy Shot and Edited @axat_vj_08.” The actors used the hashtags #HappyUdaanDay #UdaanTurns13 and #MultiVerse.
Shot and set in Jamshedpur, Udaan also marked the debut of Rajat Barmecha. The film, often regarded as one of the best works of Vikramaditya Motwane, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, and received a standing ovation.
Back home, though Udaan opened to unanimous acclaim, the film wasn’t a box office hit. Over the years, however, Udaan has managed to gather a loyal fanbase, with many hailing its performances, themes, and an especially memorable soundtrack by Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya.
