Actor Vikrant Massey starrer 12th Fail has passed the opening weekend test with flying colours. The Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial put up a healthy opening weekend collection as it continued to grow from Friday to Sunday.
12th Fail is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Anurag Pathak and draws from the struggles of millions of students who attempt the UPSC entrance exam. The film’s protagonist Manoj (Massey) flunks his 12th board exams but doesn’t lose hope. He restarts his academic journey and appears for the toughest competitive exam – UPSC.
After an opening of Rs 1.10 crore, the film grew more than 100 percent as it netted Rs 2.20 crore on Saturday, followed by more growth on Sunday with Rs 3.10 crore in earnings. With this, 12th Fail closed its first weekend at Rs 6.70 crore.
12th Fail managed to achieve this feat with virtually no promotions, riding entirely on word of mouth. To top it, the collections have come in from a very limited release of only 600 screens across the country.
Trade expert Taran Adarsh took to X (formerly Twitter) and said 12th Fail’s collections prove that “content is king”. He added that the film will now hope to perform strongly on the weekdays, with the first major hurdle being putting up a healthy Monday collection.
The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film a 3-star rating and wrote in her review, “Despite the background music, and the occasional mood spikes, ‘12th Fail’ stays, for the most part, a film that cleaves close to ground reality, with characters that makes you feel that they’ve wandered off the street, and come to hang out with us, dishing out life-lessons laced with dollops of inspiration.
“It’s not just the main cast, but the numbers of the young who gather in the hot-spots rife with coaching centres, such as North Delhi’s Mukerjee Nagar: all these multitudes, crowding into tiny rooms, far away from their homes, cramming day and night to get through the exams in the hope of becoming something more than who they are, is such an India story.”
12th Fail will now enjoy an open run till Diwali, which is when Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif will arrive with their biggie Tiger 3. The film released on Friday, which also saw the release of Kangana Ranaut’s Tejas, which is performing poorly at the box office.
