The makers have released the first teaser of upcoming Homi Adajania Disney Plus Hotstar series Saas Bahu aur Flamingo. By the looks of it, the show offers to spin the tale of the usual saas-bahu drama on its head, until we see the women of the house cursing and taking to guns.
The short clip starts on a familiar tone, with Ekta Kapoor’s title song of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi playing in the background. Things seem merry in Dimple Kapadia‘s household as she performs aarti and various rituals, and women of the household play garba. However, very soon we see a drastically different avatar of the actor emerge on screen as she points a rifle at someone not seen in the camera.
The clip was shared on social media with a caption that read, “Chetaavani: Yeh kamajor dil vaalon ke liye nahin hai! Kripaya na dekhein. Kyun? Kyunki….” (Warning: This is not for the faint-hearted). Excited fans rushed to comment as one wrote, “Saas bahu in alternate universe.” Another mentioned, “Woho, what did I just saw.” One user commented, “The song and this video, lol.”
The official synopsis of the series reads: “Saas Bahu aur Flamingo revolves around four inimitable women, the matriarch Savitri, her daughters-in-law, Bijli and Kajal, and her daughter Shanta who live in Hastipur – a forgotten village in the north-west. Savitri runs a company named Rani Cooperative, trading in products ranging from jari-booti balms to textiles. But everything here isn’t what it seems. Turns out, this cottage business is just a front for the biggest drug cartel being run in South Asia.”
Speaking about the Disney Plus Hotstar show, Dimple Kapadia said, “When tragedy strikes and the world turns its back on her, Savitri doesn’t curl up and die, but rises from the ashes and creates her own destiny. This is what I love about her character. She owns her alternate sense of morality. Trust is the only currency she deals in. Savitri is the most bad-ass saas you’ve ever seen and very compelling to watch. She has many enigmatic faces. Brutal and vulnerable, she is a master in manipulation, playing a very high stakes game that seesaws between life and death”
Meanwhile creator Homi Adajania stated that he wanted to push the envelope regarding what could be done in the genre. He said in a statement, “With Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo, I wanted to create a chaotic world dominated by indomitable women and break the stereotypes, speaking of which, the biggest one that we have broken is the Saas-Bahu cliché. I needed powerful actors and Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar and Isha Talwar are exactly that. They have owned their characters and breathed life into them making them so unique. As dysfunctional as they are as a family, when they are threatened, they unify as a fearsome force to reckon with. And believe me when that happens, you don’t want to be in their way!”
Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar, Isha Talwar, Deepak Dobriyal and Monica Dogra among others feature in pivotal roles. The series releases on May 5.
