After divorcing his first wife Nandini in 2008, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan married Renu Desai in 2009. The couple, however, had already welcomed a son, Akira, out of wedlock in 2004. In 2010, they welcomed a daughter and in 2012, they went their separate ways with Pawan marrying Russian actress Anna Lezhneva in 2013. Now, after all these years, Renu Desai has opened up about the struggles of being a single parent and not being able to start a new life with a new partner though she was briefly engaged to someone, whose identity she never revealed.
On the Nikhil Vijayendra Simha podcast, Renu shared that her sense of responsibility towards her kids stops her from remarrying. “Of course, I feel like having a partner too, but it is my sense of responsibility towards my kids that stops me from doing it.” She said, while she thinks individually she should have a boyfriend and wedding, from the kids’ point of view it all gets different.
She added, “I tried and got engaged, it was like an arranged thing. But I realised I will not be able to do justice either to the relationship or to the kids. I am a single parent. It is different when you marry someone and have kids with them. But, when you have had kids with someone, it’s a sensitive thing for someone else to enter the equation.” Renu broke off her engagement after announcing it in 2018.
Renu said she is waiting for her daughter Aadhya to turn 18 and head to college before considering getting into a relationship for a second time. In the same interview, Renu also discussed how the baggage and backlash aimed at an individual depends on how successful they are in their professional life.
Though it has been 13 years since her divorce with Pawan Kalyan, the actress continues to get trolled by the veteran actor’s fans who claim she should have been “more patient” in her marriage as the actor is “someone like God”.
Reacting to such backlash, Renu said, “I still have the trauma of my past. The baggage will never go. It will only go away when I die. The baggage is going to be there forever and I have made peace with it. I can’t fight it anymore.” She added, “The backlash completely depends on who is more professionally strong. It’s a fact. If the man is stronger professionally, the female gets the backlash and vice-a-versa. Most of the time, the females get backlashed.”
When asked if she gets angry, the actress said, “Very often.” Later she revealed that people’s stupidity angers her.
Renu Desai is currently active in Marathi films. She also works as a costume designer.
