Actor Nagarjuna on Thursday filed a defamation case against Telangana Minister and Congress leader Konda Surekha over her statement regarding the divorce of actor Naga Chaitanya and actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The development came hours after Surekha, the state minister for Forests, Environment, and Endowments, apologised for her comments.

Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna had on Wednesday expressed strong objection to Surekha’s remarks. He has filed a defamation case against her in the Nampally court under BNS section 356. Nagarjuna said that Surekha had made the remarks with the intention of damaging the reputation of the Akkineni family. A copy of the complaint was shared by Nagarjuna’s son Naga Chaitanya on his social media.

On Wednesday, Konda Surekha had sparked a controversy after alleging that Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former minister K T Rama Rao was the reason for the couple’s divorce. Her comments drew the ire of prominent Telugu film stars, who criticised her for using the couple’s divorce to smear a political rival.

Surekha’s comments had come after BRS cadres and supporters allegedly trolled her on social media, after BJP MP from Medak M Raghunandan Rao put a traditional hand-woven shawl around her neck at a function at Medak on September 30.

“Photos of mine were shared on social media with captions ‘who gave them shaadi mubarak’. There were many derogatory posts which left me distressed, sad, and angry. I could not eat for a day or two,” Surekha said on Thursday. “I apologise for my remarks about the divorce of film stars; I should not have taken their names or mentioned their family. I said it during an emotional outburst. I felt bad after understanding how much pain it caused to them. I apologised a few hours after saying it.”

The Telugu film industry had rallied together against the minister, with several film stars, directors, and others criticising her. As the row escalated Thursday, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee stepped in and requested Tollywood to put an end to the row as Surekha has already apologised.
