Deepika Padukone, who was in talks with filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga, for a role opposite Prabhas in his next action flick, Spirit, is now reportedly no longer in the film. Reports from Telugu publications claimed she was “dropped” after she left Vanga fuming “over a series of demands.”
The said “demands” included eight-hour shifts, a huge pay, and a share in profits, along with the refusal to speak the Telugu lines and wanted them to be dubbed. The reports claimed Vanga is already “scouting for a replacement.” However, there’s no official confirmation on either the film team or the actor’s end whether she was in talks for the film in the first place.
“As new mother, it’s not an unfair ask to do eight hours of shift a day. Every actor who enters motherhood naturally gets more selective and conditional,” says a source, adding, “We’ve seen that not only in the film business, but across all industries, organizations are getting more and more accommodating with new mothers,” said a source.
Earlier this month, in an interview with Marie Claire, Deepika had opened up on how she’s making the most of her motherhood. She recalled when a director, who wanted to meet her, was turned down because she wanted to be with her newborn daughter Dua, he said, “Oh, looks like she’s taking motherhood very seriously.”
“I don’t know if that was a compliment or a jab. What does that mean, taking motherhood seriously,” said Deepika. “I don’t know if [work] will be what it used to be before I had a baby, and I don’t even know if I want to be that way…is [this] my new routine and schedule? Let’s see how that evolves,” she added.
That doesn’t imply that Deepika is ready to limit her identity to a mother and a homemaker. “I do have to tell myself that your life doesn’t end the minute you have a child, and that you do need to get back to your life, or at least a part of your life before you had a baby…but every moment where I’m not able to be with her, there is guilt,” she said.
Deepika is reportedly going to start shooting for Siddharth Anand’s crime thriller King in the second half of 2025. She’ll reunite with Shah Rukh Khan and Anand after the blockbuster success of Pathaan in 2023. King also stars Suhana Khan, Abhay Verma, and Abhishek Bachchan. It is being produced by Khan’s banner Red Chillies Entertainment.
Deepika gave birth to Dua last September. Her husband Ranveer Singh has also been a hands-on father. He’s currently filming Aditya Dhar’s action drama. He’ll begin shooting for Farhan Akhtar’s crime drama Don 3 next year. Deepika and Ranveer tied the knot in Lake Como, Italy in 2018.
