Asit Modi’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been one of the longest-running sitcoms on Indian television. However, even after so many years, actor Disha Vakani aka Dayaben’s exit bothers the show’s fans. In a recent interview, Mayur Vakani, known for his role as Sundarlal on TMKOC, opened up about his sister Disha Vakani as the iconic Daya, and how she is currently busy in fulfilling her real-life mommy duties.
During a conversation with Times Of India, Mayur clarified that Disha is currently busy playing the role of a mother in real life. He opened up about being a witness of her journey since he is two years elder to her. He realised soon enough that if you perform with honesty and belief, God’s blessings are with you, and she is blessed with that along with her extreme hard work. Hence, people have showered so much love on her as Daya.
Mayur then remembered their father’s advice – that even in life, they are actors. Whatever role given, one should do it sincerely. Both brother and sister still follow his teachings. Currently, he said Disha is playing the role of a mother in real life and performing it with full dedication. He truly believes this was always his sister’s life plan too.
Talking about meeting his sister Disha off-screen as a brother, Mayur shared that since childhood, the siblings learned one thing precisely, that wherever you are, whatever role you play, give your 100% commitment. He revealed that people often ask him, ‘When will Daya come? When will Disha return?’ When I meet my sister off-screen, I meet her as a brother. But when it comes to acting and showing love on-screen, he never crosses that line. He always maintains the decorum of both the relationships.
Mayur recalled her sister’s very first acting performance, and shared that she was just five years old at the time when Namdev Lahutte came to conduct a shibir (theatre camp), primarily for children aged 15-16. Disha performed brilliantly despite being so young. He added that she essayed the role of a 90-year-old woman who comes to get medicine and leaves only after getting it. She showcased her talent in the brief moment. Namdev Lahute and his father were both present there.
After watching her, Namdev ji said, ‘Your daughter will become a star one day’. Their father also always wanted her to act and it was his dream since her childhood. Mayur also revealed that they even had their own theatre group, where they worked together from an early age. That’s how they made their bond and chemistry in acting stronger day by day. And later on, both of them got the chance to be a part of such a big TV show.
The actor didn’t hesitate while praising his sister’s level of focus. He said that since childhood, they noticed how incredible her focus level was. When she is sitting outside, she looks calm and quiet, but the moment she gets on the stage or in front of the camera, it feels as if a divine energy takes over her. Her involvement is so deep that even I could never match the level of connectivity she brings in her performance.
During the candid chat, he also talked about Disha Vakani‘s focus, calling it ‘unmatched’ and how she gives her hundred percent. Their father always taught them that actions should be simple yet concrete, and she has followed the same. He said that she has been blessed with this gift and whenever she performs, the whole world fades away. Nothing else matters to her except the character she is playing.
