Smriti Irani first gained fame when she played the role of Tulsi Virani on the Star Plus show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Smriti was a struggling actor and model when she got her big break but as soon as she got this part, she became a household name. In a recent interview, Smriti recalled that time in her life and admitted that she was working on the day of her wedding and was even working three days after she gave birth to her baby.
When asked why she did that, Smriti said that since she had seen a life of poverty, she could not imagine letting go of her wages for even a single day. “Because I’ve been poor. If you’ve been poor, you take every opportunity to work and a poor person will never let go of any opportunity that can help them earn money,” she told All About Eve India.
Smriti shared that she was born in a rented room in a cowshed and studied in a makeshift school until her fifth standard. “If you tell someone like me to let go of their daily wages, they would have a heart attack,” she said and added, “Poverty creates a pressure and I was very clear that I would not let that pressure overwhelm me.”
In an earlier interview with Neelesh Misra, Smriti had shared that during her first year on the show, she only made Rs 1,800 per day and could not even afford a car. “First year of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, I was getting Rs 1800 bucks and I had no car. When I got married, me and Zubin had Rs 30,000,” she said and added, “Mujhe yaad hai, mera make-up man kehta tha, gaadi toh lelo mujhe sharam aata hai main gaadi mein aata hu (I remember, my make-up man told me to purchase a vehicle because he was embarrassed).”
In the same chat, Smriti had also mentioned that she had to report on set after a miscarriage as well. Hours after her miscarriage, she was asked to come on the set for her next shift. Smriti said that she showed her medical papers to Ekta Kapoor to prove that she had actually been through that trauma as some gossip had been going around that Smriti was lying about her miscarriage.
