Shark Tank India Season 4, streaming on SonyLIV, recently saw founders from Karnataka presenting a wearable solution for women’s safety. Nandita Yenagi and Sharad Patil came on the show with their company Whale Wearables, and described themselves as “social impact innovators.” The founders presented their patented and handy self-defence gadgets which included a glove and a wearbale wrist band. The founders asked for Rs 30 lakh in exchange for 3 percent of the company, valued at Rs 10 crore.

Nandita explained that the glove can sound an alarm, shine a flashlight, is GPS-enabled, but most importantly, can give a light shock to the attacker. Sharad explained that the glove has a biometric feature which allows only the registered KYC user to use it, thus it cannot be used by anyone who is not authorised to. Nandita and Sharad shared that they came up with the idea for this product while they were coming back from a candlelight march for women’s safety, and Nandita explained that she also faced an episode where she was harassed on a bus.

Nandita demonstrated that the wearable glove can shock the attacker with a voltage of up to 4000 volts. Namita Thapar appeared to be concerned for the attacker’s safety, and asked, “Can this harm the attacker in terms of hospitalisation or a serious health condition because that can be a litigation issue if it is the wrong person?” The founders assured her that wouldn’t happen. They also showed a wearable strap that can be worn like a watch and is basically a giant SOS button.

Aman Gupta said that his smartwatch already has this SOS feature, but Vineeta Singh jumped in and said, “Why don’t watches make it easy? That’s my big gripe. There should be a big button that is easy to press.” Aman told the founders that the use case in watches might not work for them so they should work on the gloves instead. The founders said that they have made a personal investment of Rs 40 lakh and still have Rs 20 lakh in the bank.

Namita backed out of the negotiation and pointed out, “Your product, in its current form is not the right solution. Your intent might be okay but this is not innovation according to me. Just by putting buttons in a different place and getting a process patent, it’s not really innovation.” Kunal Bahl also got out of the deal.

Vineeta showed some confidence in the product and joined forces with Aman. “We give crores on this show, 30 lakh for 3 percent… I can help you, guide you in manufacturing,” Aman said, and added that his only condition was that the founders get government approvals. The founders locked the deal with Aman and Vineeta.
