Days after expressing his frustration over Meerut Police’s decision to ban people from performing namaz on streets, Munawar Faruqui released a nearly four-minute video to justify his reaction. On Sunday, the comedian took to his Instagram handle to share a video, where with a smile he shared his concern and requested the Meerut Police to reconsider their decision. He said, “Nobody purposely performs namaz on street.”

The comedian began the video by clarifying, “This is no criticism or any political video. It’s just that last night I read news which stated that Meerut Police have passed orders against reading namaz on streets. They have warned strict actions against people who will read namaz on streets. Their driving licence will be apparently snatched.” Munawar then said that Indians have been celebrating all of their festivals on streets.

He took the example of Janmashtami where people tie handis on streets and form human pyramid to break the handi as part of the festival. He said, “India is considered beautiful because of its festivals. We used to have favourite teams during Janmashtami. We used to talk about the highest handis being put on streets.”

He said, “Just next to Hamidiya Masjid, there is Bamba Devi’s temple, aarti for which is performed on the same streets. We have been seeing all this since childhood.” He added, “I just want to request the Meerut Police to reconsider their decision. All the political rallies happen on streets, everytime we have a VIP travelling, the same streets are blocked. Indian citizens have all the rights to celebrate their festival on streets.”

Munawar also explained the need of performing namaz on streets. He shared, “People read namaz in masjid only, but on the day of Eid as too many people come out to Masjids at the same time to perform namaz, an arrangement is made on streets to give the crowd a space to perform namaz for 30 minutes. People have been doing this for ages, let them do it. It is just matter of a day.”

The comedian said all our freedom fighters including BR Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Raj Guru, Swami Vivekananda spent all their life fighting for people’s rights. “I believe every individual has the right to celebrate their festival and pray. So please reconsider your decision.”

He added, “In Dongri, after we perform namaz on Eid, the police there give us roses. There too, we perform namaz on streets. It is very important to share love. So please don’t pass orders that can harm harmony.”

Munawar ended his video with a special message for all his Muslim brothers and said, “I request all my Muslim brothers too that if you find a peaceful environment to perform namaz then surely do it, if not then look for a space in masjid or some place where nobody else is troubled. They say, all good deeds are being written, similarly all our cruelty too is being written and I don’t think our country should head that way.”

On March 29, the comedian had reacted to Meerut Police’s decision and wrote on his Instagram story, “30 minutes ki namaz ke liye yeh? Kya ab koi bhi festival Bharat ke roads pe nahi hoga? (All this for a 30-minute prayer? Will no festival in India now be allowed on the roads?)”

He reacted to the decision of cancelling passports and driving license of people who will perform namaz on streets.
