Vijay Vikram Singh first grabbed attention as the narrator of Salman Khan‘s reality show Bigg Boss. The voice-over artist then showed off his acting chops in Manoj Bajpayee‘s The Family Man, where he plays the role of Ajit. In a recent interview, Singh called himself an “accidental actor” and opened up about how he became an alcoholic because he “could not handle failure early in life”.
Talking to Mid-Day, the actor said, “I’m not a motivational speaker because they have immense knowledge. My knowledge comes only from experience and that is what I share with people. It has a positive effect on audiences. I could not handle failure early in life and turned to alcohol at the age of 19. I was depressed for the next seven years and it almost killed me. I had a life-threatening disease because of alcoholism.”
Besides Bigg Boss and The Family Man, Vijay Vikram Singh has also appeared on shows like MasterChef India and The Kapil Sharma Show. However, he says that success didn’t come easy and he faces rejections even today but nothing can deter him. In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com, Singh had shared how it was because of his wife encouraging him to experiment with his career that he gave up his government job and got a gig in Bigg Boss in 2010, and his career in showbiz took off.
He had said, “Voice over as a profession happened very accidentally in my case. I am an MBA in international business and I was doing a normal, routine 9-5 job, that too in a Government of India undertaking. I come from a very small town ad a very lower middle class family background, so we have struggled a lot. So, for us to land a government job is like arriving in life. It is like you are settled in your career now and you don’t have to think about anything else. Unfortunately it was not the case with me. Once I landed this government job, voice over thing happened. Somebody said that I have a very good voice and I should pursue it as a career. That lady then took me to a studio and I loved the studio experience. That’s when I decided that I’ll become a voice-over artist. So, at the age of 29 I found my calling.”
“Then I switched my job to understand how media functions and joined a radio station in their ad-sales team so I could build contacts. My wife, who was my fiance then, told me that if I wanted to experiment with my career it was the right time. She encouraged me. And that’s how I got into voice overs and one year after that I sent my samples for Bigg Boss and got selected as the narrator,” Singh concluded.
