Though it was already announced that Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, starring Vikram, is a period drama, the scale of the film was unknown. Now, a behind-the-scenes video has been released on the occasion of Vikram’s birthday, which reveals that Vikram and Ranjith are in the process of making an epic film that boasts of huge set pieces and war sequences.

Thangalaan is based on a real event in Kolar Gold Fields decades ago. Going by the video, looks like it is a film about the land politics between the indigenous people and the colonial force.

The film has two Tamil writers. Tamil Prabha, known for the novel Petta, has co-written the film with Pa Ranjith, and the dialogues of the movie are penned by writer Azhagiya Periyavan of Chinna Kudai fame.

Vikram is sporting a unique hairstyle for the film and plays the head of a tribe. On top of that, his character limps as he walks, adding another dimension to the role. The collaboration between Vikram and Pa Ranjith was long overdue. The two were in talks for years, and finally, Thangalaan went on floors this year.

Other than Vikram, the film also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, and Pasupathy in important roles. GV Prakash Kumar has composed the song for the movie, which is produced by Gnanvel Raja of Studio Green, who is also bankrolling Suriya’s upcoming film Kanguva.

Meanwhile, Vikram is looking forward to the release of Ponniyin Selvan 2 on April 28. The film, directed by Mani Ratnam, features the actor in the role of the volatile prince Aditya Karikalan.
