Retro Box Office Collection Day 1: Actor Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj seem to have a winner on their hands as Retro has opened to a positive reception at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film managed to achieve an India nett collection of Rs 19.33 crore on its very first day. Although the film hasn’t earned as much as Suriya’s last project, Kanguva, which earned Rs 28 crore on its first day before falling in the face of a poor word-of-mouth, it is definitely a strong start.
The Tamil occupancy for the movie was 78.89%, with the morning and afternoon shows achieving 75% and 83%, respectively, while the evening and night shows managed a respectable occupancy rate of 78% and 77%. Kanguva posted decent occupancy numbers across all languages on its first day, with the lowest being in Hindi with 11% and the highest being in Telugu with 58%.’

Helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film features Suriya, Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran and Prashanth. While the first day numbers may be a bit of a step down for Suriya, it is definitely a bounce-back performance for Pooja Hegde. Her last theatrical release was Devaa, a remake of the Malayalam OTT film Mumbai Police, starring Shahid Kapoor. The film only managed to bring in Rs 5.5 crore on its first day and amassed a total of just Rs 33.9 crore during its entire theatrical run.
During the press tour for Retro, Suriya had complimented the vision of his director Subbaraj and hailed him as someone who can ‘bend genres’. He said, “Every time you need a disrupter in the industry, somebody who will come and change the tone. He (Karthik Subbaraj) has a very unique voice; be it the screenplay, the visuals or making the character behave in a certain way on the screen, he has always done that.” He also appreciated Subbaraj’s directorial style of coming up with new and exciting ways to challenge the actors he is working with.
While there have been a few mixed reviews for the film, many have appreciated Suriya and Pooja’s performances as the lead characters of the story. Now the film has a strong start for its theatrical run, Subbaraj and all the actors in his team will be hoping to achieve even greater numbers than this as the weekend approaches.
