One of the more fascinating aspects of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan duology was the speed with which the ace filmmaker executed his vision. In almost every promotional event, it was asserted that Ratnam and his team completed shooting for both parts of the historical film in just 120 days. The meticulous planning and speed has once again become a topic of discussion as the makers of the filmmaker’s next, Thug Life, announced that the shooting of the movie has been wrapped up.
Here’s the announcement post:
Backed by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies and Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Thug Life stars Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Abhirami, Nasser, and Ali Fazal among others. With music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Ravi K Chandran, Thug Life marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after Nayakan (1987).
While it might seem all smooth sailing now, Thug Life did run into a lot of issues with respect to its casting and scheduling conflicts. With Kamal Haasan also being an active politician, the shooting was reportedly delayed due to his commitments during the 2024 Parliamentary elections.
This resulted in the initially announced star cast of Dulquer Salmaan and Jayam Ravi dropping out of the project. It is only then Silambarasan was brought on board Thug Life, and it has been making the right noises ever since.
Apart from Thug Life, Kamal Haasan has also signed National award-winning stunt choreographer duo Anbariv’s directorial debut. As a producer, the veteran is awaiting the release of Sivakarthikeyan-Rajkumar Periasamy’s Amaran, which is expected to hit the screens this Diwali.
