“I might be singing the same song, but as long as I live, I will be singing it.” The trailer of Maamannan opens with this line in the voice of Vadivelu, but it is the answer from director Mari Selvaraj to his critics, who claim that the director keeps making films about caste issues. The following line is gut-wrenching. Vadivelu goes on to say, “I will rip out my guts and turn it into a lute and string it in every street. I will keep searching for the ears that want to listen to the truth.” So, there is the answer to the critics. Mari will keep making ‘jaadhi padangal (caste films)’.

As the line is read out, Vadivelu and Udhaynidhi Stalin are seen standing on a rock hill overlooking the city. Then we are introduced to Fahadh Faasil’s character, who is seen firing a gun. Within moments, we understand he is the antagonist. His look, demeanour and all tell that he belongs to a certain privileged caste. The trailer slowly establishes that the film could be about two political parties with Vadivelu and Udhaynidhi on one side and Fahadh on the other. Like Karnan, here there’s symbolism. It was the eerie child with the mask in the Dhanush-starrer. Here, it is a pack of dogs running together.

Talking about Maamannan at the audio launch, Mari Selvaraj said that Kamal Haasan’s Thevar Magan was a huge influence. “After seeing Thevar Magan, I didn’t know whether it was right or wrong… but it affected me so much. I saw Periya Thevar and Chinna Thevar… but I couldn’t see my father anywhere in the film (he talks about the lack of representation of the oppressed in the film)… Now, watching the film along with Kamal Haasan sir is one of the high points of my life.”

Looks like Maamannan will be a yet-another gut-wrenching film from Mari Selvaraj. The film, with music by AR Rahman, will be released in theatres on June 29.
