Lokesh Kanagaraj is not the one to guard project developments as some trade secret. In an age, where filmmakers are overprotective of their movies, Lokesh was candid about sharing his upcoming line-up, which includes Thalaivar 171, Kaithi 2, and Vikram 2. According to Lokesh, a spin-off of Suriya’s Rolex character from Vikram is also in the making.
When asked if he would again do a small-budget film with lesser-known stars banking on only his fandom, Lokesh said, “If you ask me if making a film with lesser-known stars like Shri and Sandeep–they are my best friends, that’s why using their names–would excite me than these big films, I am more excited about working in the smaller films. But I didn’t know I would be building a universe, and doing stories for inter-linked films. I told Karthi sir I will do Kaithi 2 as my third film. I am now making a film with Rajinikanth sir. And then going back to Karthi sir for Kaithi 2 as my seventh film. Already Kamal sir has asked (about Vikram 2). I have to give a closure to that as well. We have plans to make a standalone Rolex film. So, that’s there. Since they are all waiting for all these, I don’t have the liberty to do a quick (small) film.”
Lokesh Kanagaraj also spoke about why he couldn’t do Irumbu Kai Mayavi, which was supposed to be his sophomore film and first collaboration with Suriya. “The reason I didn’t do Irumbu Kai Mayavi is myself. When I first wrote the script, I didn’t believe that I could do that film,” Lokesh said.
“I finished the Maanagaram shoot in 2015, and I got this (Irumbu Kai Mayavi) in 2016. At that time, it seemed like the film would need a budget of Rs 60 crore. I didn’t want to take such a huge leap. So, after finishing the script and binding it, I told the producers that I wasn’t doing it now. I told them I didn’t know if I would get the confidence to do it. Then, I wrote Kaithi, which was a small film initially,” he added.
Irumbu Kai Mayavi, according to Lokesh, is a fantasy film where the elements of the genre will be in the story and not in visuals. It is again an action film with a huge scope for dark humour, Lokesh said. The director said that he wants to do Irumbu Kai Mayavi but doesn’t know how to fit it into his schedule for another few years.
