When Enai Noki Paayum Thota officially went on floors in early 2016, it was one of the most anticipated films in the Tamil industry since it marked the first collaboration between actor Dhanush and director Gautham Vasudev Menon. Originally planned as a quick project, with the team aiming to wrap it up in just two months, the film’s production faced repeated delays due to various challenges, including financial issues. After missing several scheduled release dates, it finally hit the screens in November 2019 to mixed reviews and failed to leave a significant mark at the box office.

Although the exact reasons behind the film’s troubled journey remain unclear, one thing has been evident since the time of its release: Gautham Vasudev Menon was dissatisfied with the final outcome. While he has repeatedly taken jabs at the project, the filmmaker recently went so far as to disown the movie altogether.

In a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, Gautham jokingly dismissed the film, stating that it wasn’t his work. When the journalist began asking a question based on something Gautham had said during the promotions of Enai Noki Paayum Thota, he interrupted upon hearing the title and quipped, “I forget that film too; what film was that? What film was that you said? I remember a song (‘Maruvaarthai’) from that film.” When the interviewer responded, “Enai Noki Paayum Thota is a film that you did,” Gautham jokingly replied, “No, not me; somebody else did it.”

Now, the filmmaker has gone one step further and admitted that he regretted making the film. While clarifying that he was not avoiding accountability, Gautham explained that his humorous remarks were his way of distancing himself from the backfired movie. “The only film I regret doing is Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta (2019) and I’ve been joking about it. I’m not shirking away from my responsibilities, but it’s just my way of not owning the film. Other than that, there is no regret, nor do I look for validation,” he said during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India.

Also starring Megha Akash, Sasikumar and Sunaina as Mythili, the Gautham Vasudev Menon directorial’s music was composed by Darbuka Siva. While Jomon T John and Manoj Paramahamsa handled the cinematography, Praveen Antony took charge of the editing.
