Sanjjanaa Galrani, known for her Kannada and Telugu films, recently shared an Instagram post about her pilgrimage to Mecca. The actor, wearing a hijab, was seen talking about how excited she is about performing Umrah. This didn’t go down well with many netizens, who criticised her conversion from Hinduism to Islam.

Sanjjanaa, who was born into a Hindu family, converted to Islam a few years back and married a doctor named Aziz Pasha. This received a lot of flak from certain section of people back then. Now, for the first time, Sanjjanaa has publicly spoken at length about her new-found faith.

Along with a video, Sanjjanaa Galrani also wrote a long post on Instagram which read, “So it is very overwhelming for me to share with everyone that this is the first spiritual journey that I am travelling for, to Mecca and Medina to perform ‘Umrah’ with my husband Azeez Pasha, my son Alarik pasha and my nephews.”

She added, “I would like to recall while I was in tremendous problems, about three years ago, my spiritual journey went much deeper, and I promised to the Lord. I made a ‘Mannath’ that if I make any trip abroad, it will first be only to your house with my husband. Before that, I would never make any leisure trip or holiday anywhere else with my family abroad and I requested Allah, placing all my beliefs, to get me out of trouble and let me go back home to my family… my prayers were very well accepted.”

Sanjjanaa Galrani also said that she doesn’t want anyone to criticise her choice and let her have the freedom to do what she wants to. “I don’t intend to create any haters towards my personal decision and I respect all religions equally, and I would appreciate it if I have the choice to follow my own way of life without enforcing it on anyone else’s… also I don’t want my choice of religion to be a topic of public discussion and opinions or judgements to be passed on me. It’s not something that I or my family would want to indulge in.”

She added, “I come from a Hindu family by birth, I have studied in a Christian school and visited chapels, all my life. Then I was inspired by Islam and I got married to my husband, who is a Muslim man, Dr Azeez Pasha and I’m leading a peaceful life. When I am such a secular person, I don’t want to be judged by people who are not secular. For a fact, nobody has the right to judge me or show me or my family in bad light. I am very sensitive and would like my privacy. Being a spiritual person, I gain a lot of positivity. And I want to spread positivity and happiness in every way I can.”

Sanjjanaa has acted in films like Prabhas’ Bujjigadu, Rajasekhar’s Satyameva Jayate, Prithviraj’s Police Police, and Ramesh Arvind’s Rangappa Hogbitna. She has a sister named Nikki Galrani, a popular actress in Tamil, who recently tied the knot with actor Aadhi Pinisetty.
