The whole internet is talking about singer/songwriter Taylor Swift’s engagement to boyfriend Travis Kelce. The couple had been dating for the past 2 years, and like many of her relationships in the past, she was very open and accepting of her partner online. But now that the engagement has been announced, fans, and especially those inclined towards the law, have pointed out that the couple might need to have the awkward conversation about signing a prenuptial agreement before actually walking down the aisle.
Travis is an American football player and plays at the tight end position for the Kansas City Chiefs. According to his current contract, Travis is currently being paid $17 million (Rs 149 crore) a year, and his two-year contract is ending this year. His last contract extension came back in 2023, which made him the highest-paid player for his particular position. Now including his NFL money and the earnings from his podcast, Travis’ net worth, according to several sources such as Page Six and Financial Express, lies between $70 and $90 million (Rs 614 cr to Rs 790 cr).
Kara Chrobak, founding partner of Bespoke Law, told Page Six that “A prenup makes total sense for them. Taylor is reportedly worth around $1.6 billion, and Travis has about $90 million. That’s a huge difference. Having a prenup lets them both go into the marriage knowing their separate assets are protected and avoids messy, expensive litigation if things don’t work out. For people at their level, it’s really about peace of mind and keeping things private, not about planning for divorce.” Kara added that the couple own many different assets which need to be kept separate, like Taylor’s touring revenue and brand deals and Travis’ earnings from the NFL or his podcast New Heights.
According to Page Six, Swift’s $400 million music catalogue, $160 million streaming deals and $370 million touring revenue are parts of her massive $1.6 billion (Rs 1404 cr) empire. She also owns real estate worth $80 million, which is roughly equal to Kelce’s total net worth. Chrobak added, “If there’s no prenup and their assets get commingled, even a small percentage of Taylor’s wealth would be life-changing for him, while any payout he might owe her would barely dent her billion-dollar empire.” Another law firm founder, Kirk Stange, pointed out that Travis could be hoping for a lenient prenup, as the player might plan to retire in a few years, and said, “Given Travis may be near the end of his NFL career and Taylor will likely continue producing music for years, Taylor stands to lose significantly more without a prenup.”
