Amid the ongoing controversy around BTS’ band member, Suga’s drink and drive case and protests demanding his removal from the band, a new CCTV footage, released by Donga llbo, confirms Suga was involved in a recent scooter accident. As per Koreaboo, BTS agency BigHit Music has confirmed that the man seen falling off an electric scooter, in a newly released CCTV clip, is none other than Suga, also known as Min Yoongi. The incident occurred on August 6 around 11:10 PM near the Nine One Hannam apartment building. Contrary to initial reports, the footage shows Suga riding on the sidewalk rather than speeding down the road.
Amidst growing speculation about Suga’s future with the group, HYBE has firmly denied rumours of his departure. The agency has apologised for the recent turmoil caused by conflicting reports and assured fans of Suga’s continued involvement in BTS. “Talk of Suga leaving BTS is nonsense. We will apologise and work harder to resolve the conflict among fans,” read a statement by HYBE.
It was previously reported that Suga was intoxicated at the time of the accident, with his blood alcohol level significantly above the legal limit. The 31-year-old rapper, currently serving as a social service agent, has since apologised for his actions.
According to The Guardian, Suga faces potential imprisonment or a hefty fine after a breathalyser test revealed he was over the blood-alcohol limit. The 31-year-old Suga, who, along with other band members, has paused his music career for mandatory national service, was found on the ground in Seoul’s Yongsan district on August 6 following a suspected accident, according to South Korean media.
A breathalyser test on the accident day showed his blood-alcohol content at 0.227%, significantly exceeding the 0.08% limit for driving license revocation, Yonhap news agency reported, citing police sources. South Korean traffic laws stipulate that drink-drivers with a blood-alcohol level of 0.2% or higher can face a 10m to 20m won fine (£5,710 to £11,420) or a two to five-year prison sentence. Drink-driving on an e-scooter carries the same penalties as car-related offenses, South Korean media said.
BTS’s label, BigHit Entertainment, initially claimed Suga was using an electric kickboard during the accident. In an apology on X the following day, the 31-year-old admitted to being fined and losing his driving license. However, it later emerged he was riding a saddled e-scooter capable of 30kmh speeds, not the previously claimed less powerful electric kickboard with a maximum speed of under 25kmh, according to the Korea Times.
Despite widespread support, some are demanding his removal from the group. A wreath protest outside the HYBE building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, symbolised this stance. Online images show protestors with wreaths calling for Suga’s BTS departure. Messages like “Min Yoongi, leave the team,” “You were the one who let go of our hands,” and “Before standing in the photo line” were also displayed. Many have even called him out for not talking his military services seriously and being a bully.
