The 66th edition of the Annual Grammy Awards, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, saw women dominating across most major categories. While American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s album “Midnights” bagged the Grammy for Album of the Year, Miley Cyrus’s “Flower” was named Record of the Year.

Subsequently, Billie Eilish O’Connell and her brother Finneas O’Connell won the Song Of The Year Grammy for their track “What Was I Made For?” from Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy “Barbie.” American singer-songwriter and musician Victoria Monét was named the Best New Artist at the ceremony.

Here are the top 5 highlights from the Grammy Awards 2024:

Taylor Swift sets new record, announces new album

Swift made history at the recent event by winning another Grammy for Album of the Year, setting a record for the most wins in that category with four. Prior to “Midnights”, she had also won Album of the Year for “Folklore” (2021), “1989” (2016) and “Fearless” (2010). This was her 14th Grammy win.

Earlier in the day, Taylor also won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights” itself. During her acceptance speech, she announced that her new album, titled “The Tortured Poets Department,” will be released on April 19, 2024.

Rapper Killer Mike taken away in handcuffs: report

American rapper and activist Killer Mike, who won three awards at the music industry’s biggest ceremony, was reportedly taken away from the venue in handcuffs by police, news agency Reuters quoted witnesses as saying. The Los Angeles police, however, did not provide any statement on the matter, and two separate press officers on duty informed the agency that they had no information.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter, citing an arena security official, reported that Killer Mike was detained for an unspecified misdemeanour charge unrelated to the Grammy Awards.

During the ceremony, Mike and his collaborators were awarded Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for their work on “Scientists & Engineers”. He also earned the Grammy for Best Rap Album for his sixth studio album “Michael” (2023).

Big day for India

In a significant victory for India, singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan and percussionist Zakir Hussain’s fusion band Shakti bagged the Grammy for Best Global Music Album for their latest release “This Moment'”. Shakti secured the award surpassing Davido’s “Timeless”, Burna Boy’s “I Told Them…”, Bokanté’s “History” and Susana Baca’s “Epifanías”.

Meanwhile, the track “Abundance In Millets” by Falu and Gaurav Shah, featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, did not emerge victorious in the Best Global Music Performance category. Instead, the award in this category was won by a team including Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain. Hussain, alongside Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, received the honour for “Pashto”, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia.

The trio also claimed a third award at the ceremony as their album “As We Speak” was named the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie heaves sigh of relief

Though Greta Gerwig’s Barbie faced disappointments at the recently held Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the fantasy comedy’s music received recognition at the 66th Grammys. While the track “What Was I Made For?” was named Song Of The Year, “Barbie: The Album” won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media. “What Was I Made For?” also secured the trophy for Best Song Written For Visual Media.

In another category, composer Ludwig Göransson earned the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media for his work on Oppenheimer.
