Singer-dancer Sapna Choudhary became an overnight sensation after she performed the song ‘Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal’, and she has gripped audiences with her songs and dance performances. In a recent interview, she talked about the nascent stages of her career and how one particular performance changed everything for her.

While talking to Siddharth Kannan, Sapna talked about how the song, and a certain trip to Bihar, completely changed how she viewed herself as an artist. She said, “There were many songs which became hits after I performed them, for example, ‘Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal’. It had been out for five years, but it became a famous song after I sang it. The biggest audience I have performed for was 12 lakh people in Bihar during a concert. I could see only heads wherever I looked, and I don’t even know if they could see me or not. It was a small village, and they had announced my concert a month prior. I don’t know what kind of promotion they did during that one month, but I was shocked to see so many people.”

She claimed that the people at the performance were unexpectedly very civil, and said, “I didn’t understand how so many people could show up for it, and people usually get happy seeing such a big crowd; I actually got worried. When my show ended, the organiser took me to a roof and told me that I cannot leave until the whole crowd disperses. My performance ended at around 1:30 am, and people were still leaving around 7 am in the morning. No one said anything; I performed the show, they saw the show very peacefully, and I left without any hassle. I still remember that show for this reason alone: that in such a huge crowd, no mishaps happened, and everything went smoothly. Now if I see crowds with 1.5 lakh or 3 lakh people, I don’t feel anything; it goes very easily.”

After talking about the performance, Sapna recalled the early days of her career and how she slowly realised her worth as a performer. She said, “Before I started performing live shows, I used to do a lot of work as a junior artist. I was a background dancer too for a lot of songs, and I used to get Rs 1,500 a day for those. When I started performing as a solo artist, that amount grew to Rs 5,ooo, and no matter how much money I earn in my life, nothing can make me as happy as that Rs 5,000. Now, it’s very difficult to afford me, and I go everywhere on my terms and conditions regarding the stage and the kind of crowd I will perform for. Now I have a very set amount that I charge because if the organiser is making money, so should I.
