A case has been registered against Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly and filmmaker Abrid Shine following a complaint by Mahaveeryar co-producer PS Shamnas, accusing them of financial fraud, police said on Thursday.

An FIR under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC was registered on Wednesday night against Pauly and Shine.

Cheating case against Nivin Pauly

According to PTI, PS Shamnas has accused Nivin Pauly of not paying him the promised compensation of Rs 95 lakh after the failure of their film Mahaveeryar. As per the complaint, the actor had assured this compensation along with a partnership in his upcoming film Action Hero Biju 2, which was to be directed by Abrid Shine. Shamnas alleged that based on this promise, he invested a hefty sum of Rs 1.9 crore in Nivin’s new project.

Shamnas also claimed that while the new film was initially registered under his own production house — Indian Movie Makers — Nivin allegedly entered into a Rs 5 crore distribution deal with a Dubai-based firm. He further accused the actor of accepting Rs 2 crore in advance from the Dubai company and cited a prior agreement that showed the film being registered under Nivin’s production banner, not Shamnas’.

Nivin Pauly’s reaction

Nivin Pauly responded to the cheating allegations via social media, stating that a court-directed arbitration is already underway in the matter. He added that despite a gag order issued by the court, a new police case was filed by the co-producer. He wrote, “The dispute has been under court-directed arbitration since May 28, 2025, with a gag order in place to ensure confidentiality. Despite this, a new police case has been registered in violation of the court’s directives, suppressing the ongoing arbitration proceedings and distorting facts. We will take appropriate legal action. The truth will prevail.”
