Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, the recently released Malayalam superhero film, has taken the internet by storm, and so has Kalyani Priyadarshan’s powerful portrayal in the lead role. While the film continues its impressive run at the box office, collecting over ₹63 crore worldwide in its opening weekend, as per reports by Hindustan Times, conversations around Kalyani’s journey into cinema have also gained traction online. In today’s time she might be labelled a “nepo-kid”, being the daughter of veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan. But Kalyani in a candid interview with Galatta Plus opened up about how her path into the film industry was far from predetermined.

“Absolutely not. My father, in fact, for the longest time didn’t want me to be a part of the industry. And I think anyone who works in the industry will understand that sentiment. I remember speaking to Dulquer about this sentiment, about how his family didn’t want him to get into the industry as well. Like I said, all these guys work a lot, we all see the glamorous side of things, but honestly, I have seen my dad working all his life, and it’s not as glamorous as people think, and I don’t think any parent would want that for their child. So my parents never really wanted me to get into it. So that itself was a struggle.”

In the same conversation, Kalyani further reflected on the contrasting perspectives of her parents regarding her career in films. “I think my mom always knew this is where I belong. But my dad was always in refusal. Which is why even to launch me, he was like, I don’t think I’m the right person for it because I have never seen you like that. A director needs to be inspired by their actors, so he has never seen that inspiration in me or never seen me as that, so that’s why he never wanted to work with me.”

Kalyani made her acting debut in the Telugu film Hello, a performance that earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She went on to establish herself across South Indian cinema, with notable roles in Tamil (Hero), Malayalam (Varane Avashyamund), and several other films including Chitralahari, Maanaadu, Hridayam, Thallumaala, Bro Daddy, and now, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.
