Empuraan box office collection day 12: Notwithstanding the barrage of controversies and hate campaigns it has been facing since its premiere, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial venture, L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, continued to dominate the Kerala box office. In fact, it recorded a figure close to Sikandar — headlined by Salman Khan, who is a significantly bigger superstar compared to his Malayalam counterpart — in the domestic market on their second Monday in theatres. Meanwhile, Empuraan has also become the second-highest-grossing film in Kerala, trailing just a few crores behind the current number one, 2018.

On Monday, the Mohanlal-starrer recorded an India nett collection of Rs 1.56 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 99.91 crore. However, this marked a 59.48 percent dip in the Malayalam actioner’s daily earnings, compared to its Sunday earnings of Rs 3.85 crore. Sikandar, meanwhile, earned just Rs 1.75 crore on Monday — its 10th day in cinemas — despite the presence of a more popular Salman Khan in the lead.

During the day, Empuraan recorded an overall occupancy of 16.30 per cent in the Malayalam market. While the morning shows began with 10.71 per cent occupancy, the rate improved as the day progressed, with the afternoon shows recording 14.83 per cent, evening shows registering 17.82 per cent and night screenings seeing 21.83 per cent occupancy.

At the same time, Empuraan has crossed the Rs 80 crore gross mark in Kerala, making it the second-highest-grossing film in the state. Currently, Jude Anthany Joseph’s survival thriller 2018: Everyone is a Hero (2023) ranks at the top of the list, having reportedly earned Rs 89.50 crore. However, it remains to be seen whether the Mohanlal-starrer will be able to dethrone 2018, considering that three new Malayalam movies — Mammootty’s Bazooka, Basil Joseph’s Maranamass and Naslen’s Alappuzha Gymkhana — as well as Ajith Kumar’s Tamil actioner Good Bad Ugly are releasing in just two days.
