Malayalam movie Family, helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Don Palathara, is set to be screened at the upcoming Bengaluru International Film Festival. The movie had its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Having already received rave reviews, the family drama is hoping to impress viewers back home too. The film is said to revolve around a catholic man called Sony, who, at the surface seems completely innocent. However, he, like many others, has skeletons in his closet.
The official synopsis of the movie reads, “Sony, a catholic man in his late twenties from rural central Kerala, comes across as a do-gooder and a well-wisher at the first glimpse. However, lurking behind his public persona is a different character. Even as some of his family members become aware of his deeds, they are silenced by the system, which mindfully and actively protects men, their delinquencies, and secrets. The family thus becomes a sturdy closet, where skeletons of the past are kept unknown and unseen by the world outside. The film tries to understand how the family system operates like mafia when it comes to the crimes from within.”
Don Palathara, in a statement, shared his experience of telling this story and said, “This film diverges from conventional character studies by telling the tale of man and his relationship with society. It also attempts to unravel the intertwining of two institutions – family and religion. The explored social system differs from the individualist, modern-day world as we know it. Here, family and its persistence become the first and only priority. A static, objective camera is employed for most of the film, and I have also used elliptical storytelling throughout.”
Family stars Vinay Forrt, Divya Prabha, Nilja K Baby, and K K Indira among others in pivotal roles.
