Twenty-eight years after they won Oscars for their adapted screenplay of Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting (1997), Ben Affleck and Matt Damon continue to be both BFFs and terrific scene partners. They’re all set to reunite next for Joe Carnahan’s crime thriller The Rip, which will drop on Netflix next year on January 16.

Netflix released the teaser of The Rip on Wednesday, which features Affleck and Damon as Miami cops working together. “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on,” the synopsis reads.

The teaser operates like a pressure cooker, with a couple of investigators (one of them played by Steven Yeun) probing an uncharacteristically calm Affleck over the incident. The flashback shows us how Affleck and Damon’s characters, along with their team, barged into a home and traced a stash of $20 million with the help of a sniffer dog.

Once they realize the size of the seizure, their expressions suggest they may not true to their jobs anymore and shift their loyalties. They even turn on each other, admitting they can’t trust each other anymore, even shoving each other. To make matters worse, they get an anonymous call warning them to leave the house within 30 minutes because “no one needs to die tonight.” “Trust has a price,” screams the teaser, as the owner of the house asks Affleck and Damon what the tattoo “AWTGG” on their fingers stands for. “Are We The Good Guys?” replies Damon, as Ben looks at him intently.

The Rip is produced by Damon and Affleck‘s banner Artists Equity. Their first film under the banner was Affleck’s directorial, sports drama Air, which released on Prime Video India in 2023 and also starred the two actors. Other films backed by their production house include Affleck’s ex wife Jennifer Lopez’s 2024 sports drama Unstoppable and Gavin O’Connor’s action thriller The Accountant 2, starring Affleck.

In a recent interview with GQ, Damon and Affleck starred on their almost three-decade-long partnership. “Who cares if we oversaturate the marketplace with movies we’re both in? We’re crazy if we don’t take advantage of the fact that we are both still here and able to do this,” said Damon.

“Every time I act with Matt is a humbling experience because I learn to appreciate further just how good an actor he is. He is so understated, so real and so honest — it’s the opposite of a ‘showy’ performance, and I think what he does is more difficult. When you know someone as long as I’ve known Matt, you develop a pretty good sense of what is real and what isn’t and it’s almost impossible to catch Matt acting. He is really a master of realism and it’s something I deeply admire about him. One of many things,” added Affleck.
