Every time Taylor Swift released an album, fans would dive into decoding the lyrics of each song — predicting, debating, and evaluating which tracks were about her past boyfriends. The singer-songwriter, who has been in several high-profile relationships since starting her career at just 16, has long kept fans intrigued with her romantic life.
On Tuesday, Taylor announced her engagement to American footballer Travis Kelce, and it’s safe to say he will be dominating the lyrical universe of her songs for a while. As Swifties rejoice over the engagement of their ‘English teacher and gym teacher,’ let’s take a look back at all of Taylor’s past relationships.
Taylor went on publicly dissing Joe when she hosted SNL. “You might think I’d bring up Joe, that guy who broke up with me on the phone. But I’m not going to mention him in my monologue. Hey, Joe! I’m doing real well and I’m hosting SNL—but I’m not going to write about that in my monologue,” she had said.
Taylor and The Twilight star Taylor Lautner dated briefly in 2009. The two met on the sets of the film Valentine’s Day, where they shared an iconic kissing scene together. But their relationship lasted only a few months, and Taylor allegedly wrote about her relationship with Lautner in the song “Back to December.”
John Mayer was another relationship of Taylor Swift that turned dramatic after it ended in 2010, only after a few months. Their breakup was messy, with Taylor writing the song “Dear John” about him.
John Mayer even went on to diss Taylor for writing about their relationship in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2012. He said, “I will say as a songwriter that I think it’s kind of cheap songwriting. I know she’s the biggest thing in the world, and I’m not trying to sink anybody’s ship, but I think it’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait till he gets a load of this!’ That’s bullshit.”
After breaking up with John, Taylor went into a brief relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010–2011. However, according to a report in Cosmopolitan, Jake randomly broke up with Taylor, saying, “it wasn’t working out.” It is alleged that several songs in Taylor’s album Red are inspired by Jake.
Taylor’s very brief relationship with singer Harry Styles—almost about three months—was the talk of the town in 2012. They were first spotted together at New York’s Central Park Zoo. However, only months after the dating buzz, Taylor was seen sitting alone in a boat, and fans predicted that they had broken up.
But it didn’t stop there. Taylor took a dig at Harry during the 2013 Grammys performance by using an English accent while performing her song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” It is also said that Harry’s song “Two Ghosts” is inspired by Taylor. After the awkward phase, the two became cordial and were seen talking at the 2021 and 2023 Grammys.
Taylor and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris met at the Elle Style Awards in 2015 and hit it off. They went public at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in May and even kissed for the cameras. However, two months after celebrating one year of their relationship, they broke up, with Calvin allegedly accusing Taylor of cheating on him in some of his songs.
After her ‘longish’ relationship with Calvin, Taylor dated actor Tom Hiddleston for a few months. The actor even met Taylor’s family, but the couple’s relationship hit a rough patch very soon, with the singer not being sure of Tom’s intentions in being with her.
Taylor and English actor Joe Alwyn started dating in 2017. They allegedly met at the Met Gala and instantly liked each other. Taylor and Joe dated for almost six years—making it the singer’s longest relationship. Taylor and Joe kept their relationship extremely private at first, and it was only after a year of them dating that British tabloid The Sun broke the news of them being together. However, this relationship too didn’t last, and Entertainment Tonight reported in April 2023 that the couple had parted ways.
After her breakup with Joe, Taylor dated Matty Healy for two months. However, her forever love Travis Kelce was just around the corner. Travis made it a mission to impress Taylor from the word go. When Taylor performed at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, where Travis plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, the footballer attended her concert and even made a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it for Taylor.
“If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it,” he said on an episode of his New Heights podcast.
While Travis couldn’t get the bracelet to Taylor, his message reached the singer. “This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell. We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other. By the time I went to his first game, we were a couple,” Taylor told TIME during a December 2023 interview.
Taylor and Travis have since been in a very public relationship that eventually led to their engagement on Tuesday.
