In one of the biggest cinema-related announcements in recent times, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios and the primary producer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, revealed that the possibility of actors Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans returning as Iron Man and Captain America is not entirely out of the question. Drawing parallels with how they resurrected Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) for the upcoming movie Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige recently noted that the return of RDJ and Evans is possible, but only under one crucial condition.
For those unversed, the OG James “Logan” Howlett aka Wolverine (played by Jackman himself), from the X-Men franchise made a heartbreaking sacrifice at the end of James Mangold’s Logan (2017). The Logan appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine is a new iteration, or in other words, a variant, and the OG remains dead. With Jackman reprising his role seven years after his character’s death, fans are now speculating whether a similar revival could be possible for other Marvel actors.
Addressing the topic, Feige emphasised the importance of preserving the legacy of these characters. He stated that if Marvel Studios wants to bring back Tony Stark/Iron Man or Steve Rogers/Captain America, they will need to approach it with the same level of care as they did with Wolverine.
“That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [Deadpool & Wolverine] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken,” he said during a chat with DiscussingFilm.
It may be recalled that Downey Jr and Evans exited the franchise after the global blockbuster Avengers: Endgame (2019). Recently, both actors have been quite open-minded about the possibility of their return. During a segment of Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” Downey Jr said he’s grown “surprisingly open-minded to the idea” of returning as Iron Man. “It’s just crazily in my DNA,” he said, as reported by DiscussingFilm.
Chris Evans, on the other hand, told ComicBook in 2022 that returning as Captain America would “have to be perfect.” He later told GQ in 2023, “I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations.”
