Actor Aamir Khan made his Bollywood debut with the Mansoor Khan directorial Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The film and Aamir’s debut itself have a million stories around them, and lyricist Sameer Anjaan recently added one more to the collection. In a recent interview he discussed the origin of the film and how he missed his chance to be a part of the project.

Sameer appeared on the Shubhankar Mishra podcast to discuss the stories behind the hundreds of songs he wrote and the ones he didn’t. The aforementioned movie lies in the latter column, and Sameer recalled how the film came to be. He said, “I’ll tell you what used to happen; Mansoor Khan, Pankaj Parashar, Anand, Milind, Aamir Khan and I used to gather at Mansoor’s home every evening to have beer. Nasir Hussain called Mansoor one day and told him, ‘You make a short film first and show me that you can become a director; only then will I let you direct a film for me.’ So he made a film called Umberto, and I wrote one song for it. Even though it was just one song, we used to sit and discuss it every day because everyone just wanted to sit and drink beer.”

He continued and said, “During one of those meetings, Nasir ji watched the film Mansoor had made, and he was very impressed. He agreed to make Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and cast Aamir in the lead role. Now Mansoor wanted to have Anand-Milind as the music directors and me as the writer, but Nasir hadn’t worked with anyone except RD Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri. Both of them started arguing over it, and refused to budge. Finally Nasir ji told him that he could either choose the music director or the lyricist, and that is how I got cut from the entire thing. Had it not been for that deal, I would have written the songs for Qayamat se Qayamat Tak.”

Sameer admitted that even though losing Aamir’s debut and Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar to Sultanpuri was a big blow, he had no idea that there was something waiting for him around the corner. “I got very disappointed after losing that film and Jo Jeeta, because Anand-Milind both made a name for themselves and the songs became super popular. One day I visited a set where Aamir was shooting along with the two of them, and Aamir had explicitly asked for Anand-Milind to be the music directors for his film. They suggested my name, but they weren’t ready to go for it. So Anand-Milind called them over to the studio and played some of my songs to them. The moment they heard ‘Khambe Jaise Khadi Hai’, they were very impressed. From there my journey truly began,” said Sameer.
