It seems everyone is invited to the latest party hosted by studio A24, as actors Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal are all coming together for the Materialists. The film revolves around Lucy, played by Johnson, who is a professional matchmaker and the trailer begins with a montage of different people telling her their preferences regarding a life partner, during which Lucy reassures a woman that “she was going to marry the love of her life.”
The plot thickens as the self-proclaimed Cupid, who seems to be doing very well for herself in terms of business, crosses paths with Pascal’s character, a wealthy and charming man. To add a pinch more fun, she meets her ex-boyfriend, played by Evans, at the same wedding party, where he is working as a waiter.
Now torn between a ‘unicorn’, as Lucy describes Pascal’s character, and a familiar love in John (Evans), she starts losing grip of her life and her career. The woman who was helping other people find love and life partners is seemingly not in touch with her own needs and idea of love. When John asks, “Why do people marry?” Lucy answers, “Because they are lonely and hopeful.”
Directed and written by Celine Song, the film is all set to release June 13. Song has many impressive notches under her belt, including an Academy Award nomination for Past Lives.
Johnson’s last appearance was in the forgettable Madame Webb. Pascal’s last work was the Ridley Scott-directed Gladiator 2, while Evans’ last round around the block was Red One. While Chris Evans will have to wait for his MCU return, Pascal will be seen in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, in which he plays the genius and malleable scientist Reed Richards.
