The John Cena-starrer Peacemaker season 2 has finally dropped, and director James Gunn has wasted no time in explaining to the whole world what all is going to be part of DCU canon going forward. This is a pivotal time for the DC Studios, with the success of Superman at the box office and Gunn’s decision to release the film so soon on OTT. Peacemaker has the opportunity to pave the future of the studios going forward.
Let’s first understand what canon is with reference to comics and superhero movies. Storyline, narrative, events, and characters that belong to the original and official source are considered to be canon. These elements have an effect on the overall structure and the future of the story going forward; for example, Marvel’s What If…? wasn’t canon; in fact, its very purpose was to show a different narrative from the main one. Another great example of this is DC’s Injustice series, including the comics and the game. They are not canon to the main DC universe and don’t affect the story in any way.
Since James Gunn took over DC with Pete Safran, people have been wondering what will happen to the stories that have already been told, including The Suicide Squad (2021). Gunn cleared a lot of this up when, through certain posts on Threads and interviews, he said that the animated series Creature Commandos (2024) will begin the DCU canon, followed by Superman: Legacy. He told IGN last year, “Now in Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker. Well then, those things automatically become canon.”
Season 2 of Peacemaker opens with the sentence, “Previously in the DCU,” where important moments from season 1 are shown to the audience, including how Chris Smith (John Cena) became who he is today. Another interesting change that Gunn made to the recap is in the scene where Adebayo called for the Justice League. That has now been re-dubbed to “Justice Gang”, which, as we now know from the Superman film, includes Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawk Girl, and Mister Terrific. Another re-shot scene is the Justice League cameo from the finale of season 1, and they have been replaced with the Justice Gang, which should give the League and their fans the hint that they are definitely not a part of this canon.
During a virtual roundtable discussion, James Gunn talked about the DCU canon and urged fans to stop stressing about it.
He said, “There was never any thought of it. Not really. I mean, could I make it so that Peacemaker is the DCEU Peacemaker, even though he’s not really that, and he walks through that portal, and that’s where the DCEU Peacemaker is? I could have, but people are like, ‘How are “normies” going to understand it? And no, the answer is, normies don’t give a s***. They don’t care about all this canon stuff so intimately.”
With Marvel dealing with a hundred things on their plate, including alleged in-house quarrels, DC and James Gunn have the perfect chance to claim the throne; it’s right there in front of them.
