For those who have watched Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, you know that the casting was just perfect, especially the role of Elisabeth Sparkle. Very few actors in present-day Hollywood could have breathed life into Elisabeth with such temerity. Even fewer actors could have made the role an extension of their decades-long careers. That is probably why, Demi Moore, who played Elisabeth, won her maiden Golden Globe in the recently conducted event. This was the only win out of five nominations for The Substance at this year’s event.

Receiving her award, a smiling Moore said, “Thirty years ago I had a producer tell me I was a popcorn actress, and I thought I wasn’t allowed to have this.” Looking at the statuette in her hand, Moore continued, “I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money but I believed that I wouldn’t be acknowledged.”

In fact, she revealed that a few years back, she assumed it was the end of the road for her in cinema. But then, the world had other plans. “A few years ago I thought that this was it, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do. And then, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance and the universe told me you’re not done,” said Moore as the crowd went into raptures.

The actor, known for films like Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, Love Sonia and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, pointed out to the robust audience that what really matters is what we think of ourselves. “In those moments when we don’t think we are smart enough or pretty enough, or skinny enough or successful enough or basically just not enough, I had a woman say to me just know you will never be enough, but you can know the measure of your work if you just put down the measuring stick. I treat this as a marker that I do belong,” said an emphatic Moore.

In a video shared by Demi Moore’s daughter, Scout Willis, we can see her family wait with bated breath as her name was announced as the Golden Globe winner. Sharing the video, an excited Scout wrote, “She did it!!!”

Close on the heels of The Substance, which also stars Margaret Qualley, Moore will next be seen in the upcoming sci-fi comedy, I Love Boosters, and is basking in the success of her Paramount+ series, Landman, which was recently commissioned for a second season.
