Captain America Brave New World box office collection Day 1: Anthony Mackie-starrer registers Phase 5’s second-worst opening, makes Rs 4.3 crore in India

Captain America Brave New World box office collection Day 1: The film only made Rs 4.3 crore on the opening day, which pales in comparison to other films in this phase, including Deadpool and Wolverine, and The Marvels

Captain America Brave New World box office collection Day 1: As the phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to a close with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the stage was set for an interesting set of superheroes to return to the big screen. Phase five started off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and is set to end with Thunderbolts*, which is scheduled to hit the screens on May 2. But the penultimate film of this phase, Captain America: Brave New World, which also marks the first solo film for Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, has received a cold shoulder from the critics and audiences alike. In fact, such has been the performance of the Julius Onah-directed film that it made Rs 4.3 crore at the Indian box office on day one, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

It was a rather disappointing start to the film, which also stars Harrison Ford as Red Hulk. What truly reflects the poor response to the film is that Brave New World has the second-lowest opening day numbers in India after The Marvels. In comparison, films like Deadpool and Wolverine, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and Quantumania made Rs 21 crore, Rs 7.3 crore, and Rs 8.4 crore, respectively. The Marvels could only make Rs 2.5 crore on the opening day.

It was also disappointing that the reboot version of Captain America, one of the most-loved MCU characters of all time, failed to find patronage in India. The occupancy for the English version was just 19.75% (3D) and 13.78% (2D), but it was leaps and bounds better for the IMAX version, which clocked at 48.79% occupancy in the country. The film was also released in multiple languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu.  It faced stiff competition in the Hindi market, which was taken over by the craze of Chhaava. With just a 11.72% occupancy for its 3D version, and a considerably better showing in the limited screenings of its IMAX and 4DX versions, the film made Rs 1.5 crore. The Telugu version opened to 16.91% (3D) and 15.66% (2D) and the Tamil version had 19.05% (3D) and 11.11 % (2D) occupancy to earn Rs 20 lakhs and Rs 35 lakhs, respectively.

In the global box office, Captain America: Brave New World opened to an almost $40M, including the preview shows, and is expected to almost make $100M in the opening weekend.

In SCREEN’s review of the film, Shalini Langer wrote, “Mackie is capable and nice to have around, but he is no Chris Evans, whose star charisma could lift this material. Old Rogers buddy Buck (Stan Sebastian) pops up just to tell us why both Wilson and Evans’s Steve Rogers have their place: “Rogers gave people something to believe in, you give them something to aspire to.”
